Minecraft® Therapy uses the Ellie Finch therapeutic model to engage teens in goal-focused, creative play within a virtual environment. Sessions are side-by-side with the facilitator, and delivery is dependent on available technology.
Purpose
To use a familiar and motivating platform to support emotional expression, communication, and problem-solving in a safe, guided setting.
Impact
Through collaborative builds, scenario-based challenges, and guided reflection, teens practise social skills, resilience, and flexible thinking while having fun in a world they know well.
Outcome
Improved teamwork, greater confidence in expressing ideas, and increased capacity to approach challenges calmly and creatively.
Minecraft® Therapy – Example Session
The session begins in a shared Minecraft world where we agree on a project—this week, designing a “calm base” complete with gardens, waterfalls, and hidden safe rooms. As we build, conversation flows naturally about problem-solving, teamwork, and real-life challenges. At the end, we take a virtual “tour” of our creation, screenshot favourite parts, and set a new theme for next time.
